Retrieving the error codes in a Frigidaire Affinity front load washer

Example model number – ATF7000EG0

READING ERROR CODES:

1. Wake the washer by pressing any button.
2. Wait 5 seconds.
3. Press and HOLD the Start/Pause and Cancel buttons simultaneously.

As long as the buttons are held, the failure code will appear in the display as an E followed by two numbers, a number and a letter or two letters. The control will beep and the Door Lock, Wash, Rinse, and Final Spin indicator lights will flash.

Quick Check

If there is no error displayed and the washer momentarily starts then turns back off:

1. Listen for a relay closure inside the motor control shortly after the Start/Pause key is pressed. If this happens, the motor control has power.

2. Check the 5 pin connector wiring between the console control and the motor control.

NOTE: During normal operation, the display may show:
“SAn” – deep clean (Sanitary Cycle)
“cd” – cool down (Sanitary cycle)
“do” or “dr” – door problem.
“Err” – an error has been detected.
“LOC” – control lock is activated.
“PAU” – cycle has been interrupted.

Big changes are coming to the Samurai Appliance Repair Forums!

It’s a triple header: we’re changing server, forum software, and domain name.

The fun all starts Monday morning, November 22. I’ll put the forum into maintenance mode so instead of seeing the forums, you’ll see a warm and heartfelt message from yours ever so truly.

The forum database will be converted to run on the new forum software. We’re currently running UltraBB forum software but are converting it run on Invision Power Board. There are lots of technical reasons for doing this but they all boil down to, “it’s more better-er.” If you’re interested, you can check out the IPB forum to get an idea of the “look and feel” of the new forum==> http://community.invisionpower.com/

The new forum will have a different domain name, too: Appliantology.org. I’m still setting things up so there’s not much to see. Don’t bother registering there because it’s all going to get overwritten by the database conversion on Monday. Your account and user information at ApplianceGuru.com will be included in the conversion to the new forum at Appliantology.org. You will probably have to set up a new password but that should all be a simple and self-explanatory process.

With any conversion there are glitches and I’m expecting there to be some with this one, too. The new forum probably won’t be open until late Monday and maybe even into Tuesday. So, what’s going to happen with ApplianceGuru.com? Great question, thanks for asking! ApplianceGuru.com will remain an UltraBB forum but will become an archive, read-only forum. Additionally, I’m moving it to a different server. So when ApplianceGuru.com reopens after Monday morning, it’ll be read-only and on a whole different server.

Why didn’t I just make the new forum ApplianceGuru.com? Because ApplianceGuru.com has lots of links from search engines and Fixitnow.com already pointing to various topics in the forum. Those links would have a different structure under Invision Board and so they would become broken links. Das bad, das reeeal bad. And besides, I had this cool domain name, Appliantology.org, that I’ve been itching to use. 😉

Kenmore / Frigidaire Side by Side refrigerator dumps water into the icemaker and door dispenser at the same time

This is an oldie problem with a tech bulletin first issued in 2001 but it still comes up every now and then these days. You put your glass under the in-door water dispenser and press the button for water. Your glass starts filling with water but so does the icemaker, making a big frozen mess inside the freezer.

Whirlpool/Kenmore direct drive washer spins as soon as it starts draining; diagnosing neutral drain problems

“Neutral drain” refers to the mechanical feature of the transmission in the Whirlpool-built direct drive washers to keep the basket from spinning– in neutral– while the tub is being drained. The reasons for doing this are obvious:

– reduce wear and tear on the washer’s drive components, the motor, coupler, clutch, and transmission and

– to prevent the possibility of water riding up the the side of the basket and sloshing over as the basket comes up to speed.

The two most common causes for messing up the neutral and letting the basket spin during pump out are either a bad transmission or a bad timer. But determining which one is the bad actor is the tricky part. But that’s why we professional appliantologists makes the big money.

A properly functioning wash cycle in these machines consists of:

Fill==> Agitate==> Drain==> Pause==> Spin (repeat for rinse cycle)

If the washer immediately starts to spin and drain, then you need either a

Sublime Master of Appliantology john63 sums this up with a nice, succinct rule-of-thumb:

Any time that a Whirlpool / Kenmore direct-drive washer fails to *neutral drain* after 3 minutes of agitation (at room temperature) the transmission is the culprit.

Replacing the neutral drain kit, while less expensive, is much more time consuming and requires disassembling the transmission, replacing the neutral drain assembly, refilling it with transmission oil and then reinstalling in the washer. Professional servicers almost never do this because the time consumed would quickly exceed the cost of replacing the transmission; so simple economics dictates that professional servicers replace the entire transmission since this is a relatively fast and easy job.

Replacing the transmission as a unit is also a more reliable repair because other things can and do go wrong with the transmission. For example, if the there is a pause after draining but the washer never goes into spin (and the motor is running, of course), then the transmission is shot and need to be replaced; this failure is not related to the neutral drain assembly.

Haier America Recalls Chest Freezers Due to Fire Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Chest Freezers

Units: About 67,500

Importer: Haier America Trading LLC, New York, N.Y.

Hazard: A capacitor in the freezer’s circuitry can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Haier America and CPSC have received reports of 18 incidents, including four reports of fires with minor property damage, consisting of smoke damage, damage to a wall, and food spoilage. There have been no reports of injuries.

Description: This recall involves the Black & Decker® Model BFE53 and Haier® Model ESNCM053E 5.3 cubic foot capacity white chest freezers. “Black & Decker” is printed at the front upper-right corner or “Haier” is printed on the front upper-left corner of the freezer. “Black & Decker” or “Haier,” the model number, the unit’s serial number and other information are printed on a rating label at the top center of the back of the freezer. Only Model BFE53 and Model ESNCM053E freezers with serial numbers beginning as follows are included in this recall:

Manufacturer: GE Appliances & Lighting, of Louisville, Ky.

Hazard: Water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: GE has received five reports of fires, four of which caused minor damage to the kitchen countertops where the dishwashers were installed and one caused minor damage to adjacent cabinets and smoke damage to the home. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the GE Profile dishwashers manufactured between July 2003 and December 2005 and GE Monogram dishwashers manufactured between January 2004 and December 2006. They were sold in white, black, bisque, stainless steel and with custom panels. The recalled model and serial numbers listed below are located on the inside on the front left side of the dishwasher tubs.
