Hi Rob,

First thing to do is to disassemble the freezer and see if you have lots of frost and ice built up on the evaporator coil. If you do, then you’ve probably had a defrost heater failure.

Gas dryer stopped drying [video]

Hi Corey,

Sounds like a couple of things going on here. First, the “slowly stopped drying the clothes” part of your question makes me think we’re dealing with a bad venting issue. This screencast explains what’s going on with that:

As for the stopped drying part of your problem, there are two common culprits in gas dryers: the thermal fuse and the gas valve coils.

If indeed you have a bad vent as explained in the screencast above, then the thermal fuse probably finally blew.

If the thermal fuse tests good, then you probably need to replace the gas valve coils. An easy check for this is to see if the ignitor starts glowing up when you first start the cycle but then you hear a click and the ignitor stops glowing. This is a sure sign of bad gas valve coils.

Bosch washer E:04 error problem

This is another E:04 error problem. I found and read the other posts in this thread, took off the outer cover, opened the pump cleanout and removed a button and a paper clip, and put everything back together. STILL getting the E:04 message, apparently when the washer reaches the rinse cycle. I can sort-of work around the problem using the soak, drain, and spin settings, but not consistently; and that is not a substitute for working through the entire cleaning cycle automatically. The output from the drain hose seems sluggish. Is there some place before the pump cleanout where things can get caught? If so, where is that and how do I get at it to clean things out? Thank you for your help.

The root of this problem is slow draining. Don’t worry that it’s about a GE washer; as I explain in the podcast, the principles apply to all front load washers because they all work the same way.

If after listening to the podcast and applying the wisdom explained therein the problem still persists, then the only thing left is to replace the drain pump. It is actually not uncommon for these drain pumps to fail this way. Bearings wear out and starting binding randomly causing slow or no pump out problems with the resulting E:04 error code that you’re seeing.

GE refrigerator freezing food – How to check the damper and thermistors in a GE refrigerator

If your GE refrigerator is freezing food in the fresh food compartment (also called the “beer section”), then the two prime suspects are 1) the damper and 2) the thermistors (in that order).

The damper is the air port that lets cold air in from the freezer section to chill the beer section. A common problem with the GE refrigerator dampers is that the flapper will freeze in the open position or break off from the motor. You can check this visually by disassembling enough inside the beer section to get some eyeballs on the damper. Or you can actuate the damper in diagnostic mode and listen for it to open and close.

GE top load washer does not drain or spin

Let’s have a look at the wiring diagram for your washer…

You didn’t mention anything about it but I’m assuming the washer agitates okay. Assuming that’s the case then, we can see in the wiring diagram that the lid switch must be okay. Because if it were not, the washer would neither agitate nor spin/drain.

So, with the lid switch ruled out, that really only leaves you with a bad drain pump or a blockage in one of the hoses to or from the pump.

You mentioned that you checked the hose from the wall to the washer. Did you check this hose all the way up to the pump? The way I do it is to remove the drain hose from the drain pump and then blow through the drain hose. You should clear an initial slug of water and then the hose should blow freely. This proves that the drain hose is clear.

If the drain hose is clear, then the problem lies elsewhere; either the drain pump itself or the suction hose going from the tub to the drain pump. By the way, the suction hose is simply the other hose attached to the drain pump. If you follow the drain hose from the wall all the way back to the pump, you have located the drain hose. The other hose attached to the drain pump is the suction hose.

You can check the drain pump suction hose by disconnecting the suction hose from the drain pump and pouring a little bit of water into the tub and then seeing if it comes out of the suction hose where it attaches to drain pump.

Finally, if both of the hoses on the drain pump, the drain hose and the suction hose, are clear, then that only leaves the drain pump itself as the problem. Replaced touchpanel on Maytag range now none of the keys are working

Certain numbers on my oven have not been working, then last week the bake button also stopped working. I replaced the control panel and now none of the keys are working. Could I have done something wrong in the installation or do I also need the computer behind the control panel? Do you have some installation instructions so that I can see if I missed any steps.

Hi Dacy,

First off, recheck all your connections to make sure they’re in the right place. Also, make sure the ribbon connector for the touchpanel you replaced is firmly seated all the way down in the receptacle on the control board computer. Disconnect it and reconnect it.

If all that checks out good, then probably what’s going on is that static electricity on your body took out the control board (the computer behind the touchpanel) when you were installing the new touchpanel. Based on your original problem description, replacing the touchpanel was the right thing to do but it may not have been done correctly.

The assembly and access to the touchpanel and control board are usually pretty straightforward– if you can replace the touchpanel, you can replace the control board. The most important installation instructions for installing the new touchpanel and/or control board is to ground out static electricity on your body!

These control boards contain very sensitive electronic components that are easily damaged by static electricity. Most people don’t realize just how susceptible to damage from static electricity they really are. This is why the installation instructions that come with the control boards will always have big notices about static electricity grounding from your body. In this regard, the most important step you can take is to wear a ground strap from your body to a grounded surface to ground out any static electricity you may be carrying. You can purchase the ground strap from your local radio shack store, they’re not expensive at all.

Refrigerator runs too cold, freezes food by the vent and compressor runs constantly

I have a GE Hotpoint top freezer unit. The unit condensor fan in the bottom back runs constantly. Food will freeze if under vent. Currently, manageable at temp 1. The unit will turn off at the temp control (thermostat) if I turn to “0”. Other notes: my wife recently clean the coils (while plugged in) even though manual says to unplug it. The unit was backed up almost against the wall (bad air circulation) with lots of dust in the carboard-like grill. The light switch and thermostat have continuity by me checking them with a voltmeter (read near 0). I’ve attached the tech sheet. Any ideas?? Please HELP!! What you have here is a simple case of a cold control with welded contactitis. The cold control is the control that the temperature dial knob is connected to, the knob you have set at “1”. It’s not uncommon for the little electrical contacts inside it to wear over time, start arcing and eventually fuse together so they can no longer open in response to temperature changes. The control cuts off when you turn it to “0” because that’s a different internal mechanism. They are not field repairable– just replace it. Refrigerator section not cold enough but freezer temperature is good and air flow seems okay

Seems that I can’t get the refrigerator section cold enough. Temp in the freezer reads 5 deg F while my the refrigerator reads 40 deg F steadystate. I’ve got the damper set for Freezer to Warmest and the Thermostat set to Refrigerator to Coldest. Airflow between the Freezer and Refrigerator seem good.

Hi Paul,

The freezer should be able to run at 0 degrees F with no problem. If you’re having problems achieving 0F in the freezer, then you probably need to clean the condenser coils. See this post for more on that ==> http://fixitnow.com/wp/2012/04/07/how-to-clean-a-refrigerator-condenser-yourself-video/

But even at 5 deg F in the freezer, the only other reasons for the fresh food compartment (or “beer section”) staying too warm are the following:

1. Air flow problem.

This could be the air flow between the freezer and the beer section. You mentioned that the air flow seems good but I’m not sure how you’re assessing that. You should be able to feel the air blowing into the beer compartment from the freezer through the damper. But you should also check the return port. Since this refrigerator is a side-by-side unit, the return port will be located at the bottom, beside the crisper drawers. Not unusual to see this port get blocked by an errant plastic bag or some other debris.

The other thing that can affect air flow is door gaskets. Carefully check the door seal on the beer compartment door all the way around using a Federal Reserve Note. Close the Note in the door and pull it out, should give some resistance when you tug. Repeat this all along the perimeter, noting any gaps, tears, or shrinkage as these will all allow warmer, outside air into the compartment.

2. Light stuck on.

This one is less common, especially in Whirlpool refrigerators but can still happen. Easiest way to check this is by opening the beer compartment door and immediately reaching back and touching the light bulb before it’s had a chance to warm up. Should feel cold. If it’s hot to the touch, then you know the light is staying on when the door is closed and you’ll need to troubleshoot this. How to replace the door latch switch in the newer model Frigidaire front load washers [video]

You’ll know you need to replace the door latch assembly in your Frigidaire Affinity front load washer if it:

– doesn’t run at all or, more commonly,

– tumbles but won’t spin

If you’re looking to replace just the touchpad itself not pre-assembled into the control panel, well, good luck with that. Those are manufactured exclusively for Whirlpool Corporation and the way that works is that Whirlpool agrees to buy boocoo touchpads at a pre-negotiated, hefty discounted price. So, unless you’re prepared to buy several thousand, Ark-Les Corp probably won’t even give you the time of day.
