Use the Form, Luke!

This website has over 3,000 pages packed with pearls of appliance repair wisdom just waiting for you to feast your bleary, blood-shot squinties upon them. Just use the search form below.

In my vast and awesome experience running this website for 10 years now, I’ve realized that most people don’t know how to use a search function. Quick review: in searching, always start with the most general terms and then add terms to narrow your search. For example, if you have a Maytag Neptune MAH3000AWW that leaks, your first search should be something like, “washer leak.” Then, to narrow the results, progressively add more terms such as, “Maytag,” or “Neptune.” Ok, now you try…

The Samurai Appliance Repair Forum Ch-ch-ch-changes

So, we just completed a detailed and exhaustive accounting of all the income and expenses associated with running Fixitnow.com and the Samurai Appliance Repair Forum and we discovered something verrrry interestink: the forum generates less than 7% of the revenue that the main site, Fixitnow.com, does yet it comprises more than 82% of the overhead because of higher hosting fees and bandwidth charges! In other words, I’m losing my a$$ running this forum. 😯

But I figured out a way to keep the forum running…

Access to the forum will continue to be free on a read-only basis. As an unregistered user (Lurking at the Threshold), you will not be able to search the forum, send private messages, start a new topic or reply to an existing topic. As a registered user (Grasshopper), still free, you may search the forum (a very server CPU time-intensive operation which was causing problems with the server). But in order to start a new topic or reply to an existing topic, Grasshoppers will need to pay a one-time access fee of $5, after which they’ll be promoted to Apprentice Appliantologist and have full posting rights forever. BTW, if you have ever donated any amount over $5 to the United Samurai Beer Fund, you don’t need to pay the one-time forum fee– just let me know the email address from which you made the donation and, wallah!, I’ll make you an Apprentice Appliantologist.

In order to get posting access, first register as a Grasshopper and then go to the “Subscriptions” tab in your account and select, “Lifetime Membership in the Samurai Appliance Repair Forum,” here’s the direct link.

Of course, professional appliance techs will never be charged because they contribute to the forum intellectually by answering questions. If you’re a professional appliance tech and would like to participate in the forum, just contact me (samurai _AT_ fixitnow.com) or one of the forum moderators and you’ll get promoted to Master Appliantologist without ever having to pay the one-time fee. The idea is to only charge a one-time nominal fee to Grasshoppers and then *only* if they’d like to post in the forum.

This forum is successful and popular because people get expert help from lots of different techs. Thanks for helping to ensure that the Samurai Appliance Repair Forum will continue to be here both now and the next time you need help fixing your broken appliances! 8)

Samurai Appliance Repair Forum Server Migration

We made it! Last night, I moved the entire repair forum, whole and intact, over to a Virtual Private Server (VPS). This should give us more resources and greater reliability resulting in a faster server and more uptime. Things could be a bit bumpy for the next day or so as the domain name for the forum, Applianceguru.com, propagates throughout all the name servers on the Internet and finally resolves to the IP address of the new server. Enjoy the ride! 8)

Until the domain resolves to our new server, you can reach the forum by going to Appliantology.org. This domain is already pointing to the VPS so go on in and start browsing and posting.

The other problem some of you may have is that you won’t be able to log in and you may even keep getting a message saying that you need to allow cookies in your browser even though you know that cookies are already enabled. If you run into this, you can easily fix it by simply clearing all cookies in your browser (a good idea to do it periodically, anyway, because cookie files can get REALLY big). More details about this and other fixes for both Firefox and IE browsers in this topic.

Meanwhile, savor the over 3,000 pages of appliance wisdom ratcheer at our main website, Fixitnow.com.

Grand Opening: Samurai’s Staber Store

The Samurai’s very own appliance store is up and running! The Samurai’s Staber Store features washers and dryers built right here in Ameedica by Staber. We have frequently discussed these fine laundry appliances here at Fixitnow.com, The Samurai Appliance Repair Forum, and in our newsletter.

You’ll find other appliance notions and sundries in Samurai’s Appliance Emporium so be there now!

Samurai Appliance Repair Forum Down

The Samurai Appliance Repair Forum, the Mecca of DIY appliance repair help, is temporarily down while we resolve some server issues. Should be back online tonight or by Saturday morning at the latest. In the meantime, I’m available for quick questions via AIM, my screen name is Zenzoidman.

Sorry for the inconvenience but persevere and your long-suffering shall be richly rewarded. 8)

UPDATE: The forum is back online!

Samurai’s Appliance Repair Photo Galleries

After you’ve been kicking around the Web a while, you find that you’ve scattered your photo albums among several photo-sharing websites. As newer, slicker photo storing websites come available, you start using them; I never bother to transfer my photos from the older sites, waaay too tedious and, besides, I have important things to do, like picking tuna from between my teeth or scratching my bum then seeing how long I can resist sniffing my fingers.

Anyway, I’ve consolidated all my vast and awesome galleries of appliance repair photo albums into one convenient little page with its own little domain name: ScrotumScrubber.com. Be there now.

Still Blogging After Six Agonizing Years!

Just realized that this month marks my six year anniversary of blogging about (mostly) appliance repair topics. How do I do it? More importantly, WHY do I do it? I still wonder that as I swill cheap beer and pick black flies out of my nostrils. I mean, sure, making two-bits a day and all the water I can drink is certainly more than generous compensation for what I do here but, after six years, there has to be more motivating me than just material compensation. I think it comes down to sheer boredom. I mean, what the hell else would I do? Ok, I could go back to my old job of licking urinals at the Texaco but, somehow, that job left a bad taste in my mouth. So, guess I’ll just settle in for another six years. Well al-l-l-lrighty then.

2. New Blog Posts During October

4. Got Parts?

1. New Look and Feel

The biggest news this month is the total make-over of Fixitnow.com. You can read about all the details in this post but what I want to emphasize here are the key changes in the site as they affect your efficiently finding the appliance repair information you need.

First thing is the new site search box, on the top right-hand side, just below the logo. This is a built-in search engine, not a third-party Yahoo or Google search. That means it’s much more detailed, comprehensive, and up-to-date than a third-party search utility could ever be. Use it! Alot! You can start with a specific search term, such as “Kenmore model 417.36465 dryer will not get hot.” If you don’t get any results or nothing answers your question, then zoom out to more general search terms such as, “dryer no heat.”

Just below the site search utility in the right-hand sidebar is the LivePerson box. If I’m online, you’ll see a face in the box. Click it and I can help you find stuff. For more detailed help, start a new topic in the repair forum. In fact, that’s the first of the three main sections just below the LivePerson box. Let’s go ahead and talk about those.

You’ll find the three sections immediately below the LivePerson box to be particularly illuminating. They are:

1) The Awesome Do-It-Yourself Forums
The first section is a link to the World-Famous Samurai Appliance Repair Forums where you’ll get personalized help from myself and other master appliance techs who can help you troubleshoot and repair any major appliance.

2) Appliance Troubleshooting Help
This is a list of links by appliance to the repair help section of our parts partner’s website. They have lots of great illustrations, diagrams, and diagnostic information at their site and you can turn around and buy the part right there. Hey, why reinvent the wheel?

3) Key Pages
These are static pages (i.e., non-blog pages) with commonly sought-after information.

Just below this is the section of Post Categories. Here, you can browse all the posts in a category, such as “Dryer Repair,” “Washer Repair,” etc.

Another change is that future non-appliance repair posts, such as my libertarian rants, Hillstomping Updates, and philosophical ramblings will be posted in my new personal blog, The Zenzoid Files. If you get bored jamming bamboo splints under your toe nails, come check out the train wreck at www.zenzoid.com.

2. New Blog Posts During October

October was a very heavy month for blog posts, 34 total, and almost all of them focused on some aspect of appliance repair– too many to list or summarize; to list them would be unusually cruel and boring, and to summarize them would be a frivolous exercise in wasting time. But you can easily and quickly browse them yourself by checking out the October archive. Here’s another cool feature of WordPress, the new publishing software I’m using for Fixitnow.com: the monthly archive pages contain summaries of each post during that month, not the complete, full-length post, a la Blogger, my old publishing system. While skimming the archive page, just click on the title to read the full article.

3. The Samurai Appliance Repair Forums

The Samurai Appliance Repair Forums are rockin’. Here are a few summary stats on the forum for the month of October:

Visitors, total: 2,266
Visitors per day (average): 73
New Posts: 2,705
New Posts per day (average): 87

Lots of folks are going to the repair forum and getting stuff fixed. And they should. It truly is the premiere appliance repair forum on the web with an unrivalled lineup of master appliance techs from all over the world who donate their time to help grasshoppers with their vexing appliance problems.

4. Got Parts?

I always think it’s obvious that you can buy parts through my website; in fact, I don’t like to be in-your-face about it because it could detract from the ambiance of the site. But I’m always shocked when I find out, usually either in the repair forum or in an email exchange, that someone had no idea that they could buy parts through my website. This just in from the newswires: FLASH– IF YOU NEED APPLIANCE PARTS, BUY THEM THROUGH THE PARTS LINKS AT FIXITNOW.COM.

I know, you’re wondering why you should buy parts through my parts links instead of buying somewhere, anywhere, else. Fair questions, I’ll give you three reasons:

1) The prices are as good or better than you’ll find anywhere else.

2) But on top of great prices, you get world-class customer service and the best return policy anywhere: you can return any part for any reason. Period. Yep, even electronic or electrical parts that have already been installed and, oops!, that didn’t fix the problem (but allow me to remind you, gentle reader, of Samurai’s Ichiban Law of Appliance Repair).

3) My website and repair forum survive because do-it-yourselfers like you buy their replacement parts through my affiliate links. Whether you buy the parts through my parts links or go directly to my parts partner, RepairClinic, it doesn’t cost you any extra, the only difference is that if you go through my links, I get a small commission on the sale. Hey, a few pennies here, a few pennies there and before you know it, I have enough money for a bomber can of Bud.

But, in addition to the foregoing, they really do have some very good repair information over there. For your convenience (because that is all ever think about), I’ve included the list of links to the appliance repair troubleshooting sections at RepairClinic:

Finally I just want to thank you for visiting Fixitnow.com and making it a part of your Internet experience. There are bizzillions of websites out there and I’m glad you found ours!

~fini~

Welcome to Our New Digs!

If you’re one of those enlightened and extremely intelligent individuals who visits this site regularly then you’ve noticed the make-over. Yep, I finally got fed up enough with Blogger to convert my entire site over to WordPress. Much greater control over the site, the ability to group posts by category (dryer repair, gubmint, etc.), built-in non-branded site search engine, all PHP and MySQL-based, and dynamic pages which eliminate the need to republish the entire site (almost 1,000 posts!) when I make one little template change.

I’ll still keep the old pages on my server– they’ve all been indexed by the major search engines and there’s no sense in deleting them. If you’re new to this site, you can check out the old look here. Among the changes you’ll notice are the elimination of the main table to get you right into the most recent content; smaller font and fewer colors lending a more polished (dare I say, professional?) look to the site. Also, the site looks and feels best using the open-source browser, Firefox. (WordPress is open-source software, too, by the way.)

One of the many cool feature of WordPress is that you, the user, can start a post. You betcha, just like this post about dishwasher life spans and this one about a dryer that won’t work. To start a post or to comment on one, just register using the link at the bottom of the gray sidebar on the homepage.

Still moving in, though: have to finish categorizing the posts and setting up the static supporting pages. Should be all moved in in another two weeks. The final result will hopefully be a website that is more interactive and that makes it even easier for you to find the appliance repair information you’re looking for. Thank you for your forbearance and patience during this difficult but exciting transition for Fixitnow.com.

Shakin’ and Bakin’ at the Samurai School

In case you’re wondering why I haven’t been posting as frequently of late, it’s because I’ve been so busy answering posts and tending to my duties as HMFIC at the repair forum, a.k.a., the Samurai School of Appliantology. With more than 20 new grasshoppers and 100+ new posts every day, it keeps me and the other Master Appliantologists hoppin’, ya sure, ya betcha!

We opened the doors at our new campus in April and, in a little over three months, we have over 1,700 grasshoppers seeking appliance repair know-how. To help fill these tender skulls with knowledge, the School has more than 30 Master Appliantologists, including yours so very truly, the Exalted Grand Master of Appliantology, guiding these grasshoppers on their path to appliance enlightenment. Yea verily, the fields are ripe for the harvest.

And I recently added a chat room (or Chatto Ru-mu in Japanese) to the Samurai School. It’s a great place for light chat, clearing up misunderstandings, or just tawkin’ smack. However, chat is far too cumbersome and intensive a medium for technical how-to discussions– that’s what the forum is for. OTOH, if grasshoppers are confused about how to post an attachment or a link in the forum, or what further information they should provide so you can answer their question, that’s exactly the kind of confusion that chat can clear up. The Chatto Ru-mu, just like the Samurai School itself, is completely free and is open 24/7 to all registered grasshoppers, apprentices, and Master Appliantologists.

So, if you need help fixing your own appliances, register in the Samurai School of Appliantology Forum (it’s free) and you’ll be plugged in to the premier do-it-yourself appliance repair resource on the web.

The Samurai School of Appliantology: it’s not what’s for dinner ‘cuz you can’t eat it; but it does have some damn fine appliance repair help.
